The Met Gala, fashion's most hyped night, returned in 2025 with the theme "Tailored for You," supposedly inspired by the Costume Institute's exhibition "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style" and Black dandyism.
Where Did It All Go Wrong?
- The Underwhelming Interpretation: Despite the rich inspiration of Black dandyism, known for its flamboyant colors, bold prints, and impeccable tailoring, the blue carpet (soggy from unexpected rain) was largely awash in a sea of predictable black and white ensembles. Critics lamented the lack of vibrancy and the absence of truly innovative or daring looks. Where were the "pops of color" and "fun fabrics" that the theme seemingly invited? Many felt that attendees, even those in suits, completely missed the mark regarding Black American-inspired dandyism.
- The Whitewashing Accusation: A significant point of contention was the apparent lack of support for Black designers. Many questioned why so many celebrities, even those not bound by designer table affiliations, opted for white designers. This sparked outrage, with some arguing that the entire point of the theme – to showcase Black design and designers – was undermined. The presence of Thom Browne designs on numerous "meh" looks further fueled this criticism.
- Cultural Missteps and Tone-Deaf Moments: Several looks ignited controversy for their questionable cultural sensitivity. Lisa from Blackpink faced severe backlash for a Louis Vuitton bodysuit featuring portraits by artist Henry Taylor. While the intention was to showcase figures from the artist's life, one of the depicted faces bore a striking resemblance to civil rights icon Rosa Parks, positioned in a highly inappropriate location on the garment's briefs. This was deemed disrespectful and tone-deaf, especially considering past accusations against Lisa regarding the use of racial slurs.
- The "Durag Don't": Model Amelia Gray Hamlin's pantsless lace Valentino outfit, complete with a lace durag, was another widely criticized look.
While durags are a significant part of Black culture, worn for hair protection and as a fashion statement, many felt its use by a white individual in this context was culturally appropriative and missed the spirit of the theme. The internet's reaction was swift and largely negative. - General Lack of Imagination: Beyond the specific controversies, a prevailing opinion was that many attendees simply didn't try hard enough. Numerous celebrities showed up in standard black tuxedos or safe, uninspired gowns that barely nodded to the "Tailored for You" concept, let alone the deeper nuances of Black dandyism. This led to accusations of laziness and a lack of respect for the theme and its cultural significance.
The Missed Opportunity
The Met Gala 2025, with its focus on "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style," had the potential to be a landmark event, celebrating the profound influence of Black culture on fashion and providing a platform for talented Black designers.
